THE WORLD PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE VETERANS OF VJ DAY – THE MEMORIAL DAY FOR THE END OF THE WAR 15TH AUGUST 2020
Many pipers around the world recently marked the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. They made a positive impact on their communities and asked if they could once again lead the way by playing Battles O’er at sunrise on Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, also called Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day, the dawn of the day 75 years after WWII came to an end. 2020 and the 75th anniversary of VE & VJ/VP Day is likely to be the last time that we could say our collective, special “thank you” to the surviving veterans of these bloody conflict as their numbers continue to fade.
However, WW II did not end until VJ- Day, on 15th August 1945, when Imperial Japan announced unconditional surrender. On both sides, the majority of veterans from this campaign feel they are the “forgotten army” during these important anniversary commemorations.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be restricted activities which will take place to commemorate and celebrate VJ Day. Battle’s O’er will be played at safe locations (keeping to social distancing and others measures that may still be in place within each country) at 0600, local time, in each country on 15th August this year.
The bugle will then play again at 11am and the church bells will ring in the evening.
